Heron was one of the greatest inventors of antiquity, or as one would describe him today, an industrial engineer. He was one of the first to come up with a way to harvest and utilize the wind's energy. He invented a machine with a wind wheel that drove an air pump that was used to drive a musical organ. Among the many mechanical machines, he invented was also one of the earliest methods of turning steam into rotation, better known as the "Herons Engine".
In addition to developing various mechanical devices, Heron was also a skilled mathematician and is still credited today with Heron's formula, which is a formula for calculating the area of a triangle, based solely on the length of the triangle's sides.
